Sports Injuries

Description:

Sports injuries may be traumatic or repetitive in nature. Traumatic injuries may occur during the event or while training for the event. Most contact sports have a higher probability of injury that will result in loss of function, swelling, bruising, fracture, or sprain. Incidence of mild traumatic brain injury may be a result of contact to the head, neck or face during sport or activity. Repetitive injuries may be a result of improper training or mechanics, and may take weeks to months to develop. This usually occurs with the gradual onset of pain during or activity.

Injuries include:

  • plantar fascitis
  • shoulder pain
  • elbow pain
  • knee pain
  • hip pain
  • lower back pain
  • ankle pain
  • foot pain

Screening and Diagnosis:

A complete history and physical examination should be performed by a trained and experienced physician. If the injury is acute in nature, rest, ice, and compression needs to be provided to slow down the inflammatory process. Medications may be prescribed to help with the inflammation and pain. Your physician may order diagnostic studies such as x-ray or MRI to rule out fracture or soft tissue injury. After the inflammation and pain has improved, functional loss should be assessed.

Treatment:

A highly trained physician, will establish treatment goals and a plan to return you to your sport or activity. Injuries need to be stabilized or mobilized based upon the injury and functional loss. Chiropractic care and physical therapy can be used to assist in the rehabilitation of the injury. If it is repetitive in nature, then training changes may be recommended and provided to reduce to probability of the symptoms returning.
